The Beauty of Brass

How it started.

When we discovered our first designer, Bella from Kenya, we fell in love with the pieces she and her team had created and made by hand. They were golden in colour, had a weighty feel and we could not believe they were made of brass.

In my early twenties I was discovering my sense of identity, which my clothes and jewellery became a huge part of. I absolutely loved shopping from the demi-fine jewellery brands –finding I would mostly be buying gold or silver-plated jewellery which tended to fade and change colour.

Lala Salama was born through a desire of sourcing only sustainable jewellery.

Brass is sustainable.

Let’s also not forget, a huge reason for us using brass in so many of our pieces is due to it being sustainable; sourced from padlocks, old jewellery, metal scraps, allowing us all to start shopping more consciously and not taking from the earth in the form of mining.

There is such beauty in using brass and other sustainable materials; we hope that we see more and more of this in jewellery creation in the future.

Have a peek out another of our blog posts about sustainable jewellery.

What is sustainable jewellery?

Brass in all its forms.

There is such a beauty to brass that we believe has just not been brought to the light yet. It has a beautiful colour and over time, through oxidation and use, it can have a slightly more antique-ey look – but a little buffing and care with a simple polishing pad can get this back to looking brand new.

Brass has been found to have metaphysical properties, allowing one to connect with their inner self and able to show up as their best self every day.

This resonates so strongly with our brand mission - encouraging one to be able to express their personal signature and energy.
